Kagoshima Prefecture

I visited Kagoshima to see the magnificent Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes.
First, I took a ferry to Sakurajima and went ashore. Seeing the volcanic plume up close was an impressive experience, and I was amazed by the power of the volcano. On the other hand, the view of Sakurajima from Sengan-en, the former villa garden of the Shimazu family, offered a completely different kind of beauty, where the majestic volcano blends harmoniously with the elegant Japanese garden.
Kagoshima City is easily accessible from Kagoshima Airport by airport limousine bus. For sightseeing, a one-day transportation pass is highly recommended. It includes unlimited rides on city sightseeing buses, a round-trip ferry to Sakurajima, and the Sakurajima Island View Bus, making it a convenient and economical way to explore the area.
