Hokkaido (Kushiro)

I visited Kushiro to see the Kushiro Wetland, which became Japan’s first wetland designated under the Ramsar Convention in 1980.

While exploring the wetland, I was fortunate enough to encounter wild Ezo deer and the Red-crowned Crane, a Special Natural Monument of Japan. It was a truly memorable experience that allowed me to appreciate the richness of Hokkaido’s natural environment.

Public transportation from Kushiro Airport to attractions such as the Kushiro Wetland is limited. If you want to make the most of your visit, renting a car or hiring a sightseeing taxi is highly recommended.

In Kushiro City, there are relatively few restaurants serving full meals late at night, and many establishments are Japanese-style pubs (izakaya). If you plan to have dinner in the city, it is a good idea to check restaurant locations and opening hours in advance.
